The status of Cambridge as the leading regional tech city provides an opportunity for substantial growth in terms of the local economy and employment opportunities.

The industry generates over £1.1 billion in income for the workforce in the region making it a major contributor to the wealth of the region. 

There are currently over 58,273 people employed in the sector and last year there were 29,000 jobs advertised for this area of work with an average salary of £43k.

The majority of jobs are found in the Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire areas although there are employers and opportunities spread throughout the region.

The non technical skills demanded for these roles include problem solving, communication and customer service.

As well as employment in the sector almost every area of the economy employs people with different levels of IT skills and the largest employers such as the Health Service will employ specialist IT staff.

This is a sector that is always changing and evolving as developments in the field emerge. The very rapid advancement of AI will without doubt lead to the emergence of roles that do not even exist today.
